We confer the LAURA INGALLS WILDER AWARD® upon books that exemplify exceptional standards in the presentation of original historical fiction content. This award recognizes historical authenticity in portraying common attitudes within a particular historical period. We prize the meticulous development of a creative narrative in an expertly researched historical context. This award strives to encourage all voices, and all stories of literary merit, regardless of perspective, as a starting point for dialogue and learning. The award also honors the skill of constructing excellent prose and incorporating realistic dialogue into a compelling text. This prestigious accolade is our tribute to books that represent an extraordinary achievement in literary historical fiction.
From 1970 to 2017, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Bronze Medal recognized authors or illustrators who made substantial and lasting contributions, over a period of years, to children's literature.
After being discontinued in 2018, this committee revived the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award in 2024 with a new emphasis on literary excellence in accurate historical fiction. In this new configuration, the award honors authentic voices in meticulously researched historical contexts that provide readers a starting point for contemporary analysis of history and the lessons history teaches.
